Elvira Harris Obituary

Elvira W. Harris, a devoted educator, community servant, and cherished matriarch, entered eternal rest on February 10, 2026, in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She was born on June 22, 1934, in Wilmington, Delaware, to the late Ellsworth B. Wilson Sr. and Edna R. Wilson. Her life was marked by faith, service, scholarship, and a deep love for others.

Elvira graduated from Howard High School in 1952 and earned her degree from Delaware State University in 1956, where she met the love of her life, Clarence I. Harris. Their union blossomed into 67 years of marriage, grounded in devotion, partnership, and family.

A pioneer in education, Elvira served at Wilson Elementary School in Sayreville, New Jersey, for 35 years, becoming the first African American hired in the entire district. She dedicated her life to nurturing young minds and advocating for the power of education.

In 1975, Elvira became a faithful member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in New Brunswick. She served on the trustee board, presided over the Edward Lane Education and Scholarship Committee (2005–2012), chaired Women’s Day, served as vice president of the Senior Citizen Ministry, and sang joyfully in the choir. Her service reflected her belief in community, faith, and giving.

Elvira was a proud charter member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and also belonged to the Ebony Suburbanites and the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Society. A gifted athlete, she played on championship basketball teams in high school and college and was inducted into the Delaware State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.

She embraced life with joy, dancing with the Franklin Township High Steppers, participating in local parks and recreation programs, traveling, skating, bowling, visiting the casino, cooking and baking her famous homemade rolls, and connecting with loved ones by phone. She was an avid sports fan and, alongside Clarence, loved hosting their annual Fish Fry/Anniversary, bringing family and friends together from near and far.

Elvira was preceded in death by her parents, Ellsworth B. Wilson Sr. and Edna R. Wilson; her siblings Margo (Pauline Anderson) and Adalyn Pretlow; and her beloved husband of 67 years, Clarence Harris.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Joan Harris (Maurice) and Craig Harris; her grandsons, Kahliff Harris (Yasmeen) and Jihad Harris; and her great‑grandchildren, Nevaeh Harris and Kamari Harris. She is also survived by her siblings Patricia Wilson (Treedy) of Wilmington, Delaware; Ellsworth B. Wilson Jr. (Sonny) of Dover, Delaware; Jean Watson of Wilmington, Delaware; and Gwendolyn Pierce (Gwenie) of Townsend, Delaware; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will forever hold her close in their hearts.

Elvira lived a life of purpose, grace, and generosity. Her legacy of love, leadership, and service will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
